Toolbox

Getting started

Install the iw Toolbox on your Mac, run your first DNS lookup on first launch and find out where the license and updates live.

The iw Toolbox bundles DNS, mail and network checks with around 80 developer tools in one app. It talks to name servers directly, with no detour through third-party servers, no ads and no query limit. For every result it shows the raw data and the dig command you can use to reproduce it in the terminal.

The app’s interface is in German. This guide gives the German labels in bold, with a translation where it helps.

Requirements

macOS 12 or later
Network internet access; UDP and TCP on port 53 for direct DNS queries
License not needed for the basic tools

The macOS app ships first. Windows, Linux, iOS, Android and a web version follow. In the browser all DNS queries go over DNS over HTTPS, and tools that need their own network connections are hidden there. If UDP/TCP 53 is blocked in your network, you can switch the Mac app to DNS over HTTPS as well (see DNS Lookup).

Installation

  1. Download the DMG from the download page.
  2. Open it and drag the app into the Programme (Applications) folder.
  3. Launch the iw Toolbox from Launchpad or via Spotlight.

First launch

The app opens straight into the DNS Lookup tool. On the left is the sidebar with all tools by category, at the bottom the status bar with the active resolver. The interface explains how the window is laid out.

There’s nothing to set up. By default the app asks your system’s resolver. If you’d rather use a fixed public resolver or DNS over HTTPS, change it under Einstellungen › Resolver (Settings › Resolver).

Your first lookup

  1. Type a domain such as inwendo.de into the Name oder IP (name or IP) field.
  2. Leave Typ (type) at A or pick another record type.
  3. Click Abfragen (query) or press Enter.

The result appears below: first the findings with a coloured status dot, then the Antwort (answer) table with name, TTL, type and value. The Rohdaten (raw data) and Befehl (command) tabs show the DNS response in dig format and the matching terminal command. Reading results explains what the colours mean.

You can also paste a full URL or an email address; the app takes the host name from it. If you enter an IP address, it looks up the PTR record automatically.

Without and with a license

Free to use without a license:

  • DNS Lookup, MX Lookup and Reverse DNS
  • the Verlauf (history)
  • all developer tools, see Developer tools
  • IP entsperren (unblock IP)

The other DNS, mail and network checks, Massenprüfung (bulk check) and Beobachtung (watching) need a license from inwendo. These tools stay visible in the sidebar with a small lock. If you open one, you see the notice Dieses Werkzeug braucht eine Lizenz (this tool needs a license) with the button Lizenz eintragen (enter license).

The license is free for personal use and for inwendo customers; companies can get one on request. Request it here, then paste the key under Einstellungen › Lizenz into the Lizenzschlüssel (license key) field and click Aktivieren (activate). Without an internet connection, a license that has been confirmed once stays valid for 14 days.

Updates

The Mac app checks for new versions once a day and offers them with release notes. To check by hand, go to Einstellungen › Über (Settings › About) and click Nach Updates suchen (check for updates). The installed version is shown there too.
