Updates
The iw Toolbox for macOS keeps itself up to date with Sparkle. How the automatic check works and how to look for updates manually.
The iw Toolbox for macOS updates itself. It uses Sparkle, the proven update framework for Mac apps outside the App Store. There’s nothing to set up.
Automatically
The app regularly checks for a new version on its own, about once a day. If there is one, a window opens with the release notes. You install the update from there. Sparkle downloads it, verifies the signature, replaces the app and relaunches it. Your settings, history and license are kept.
Sparkle verifies each update with a signature. Only updates signed with inwendo’s key are installed.
Manually
- Open Einstellungen (settings) and scroll to the Über (about) section.
- It shows the installed version, for example Version 1.2.0 (14).
- Click Nach Updates suchen (check for updates).
Sparkle then shows either that you’re up to date or the new update with release notes.
Where updates come from
The app fetches the list of versions (the so-called appcast) from serverpanel.inwendo.de, inwendo’s server control panel. The appcast also says where the update is downloaded from. As with any request, the server sees your IP address and the app version. The app doesn’t send a system profile.
If the button is grey
If you see the greyed-out button Updates nur in signierten Releases (updates only in signed releases) instead of Nach Updates suchen, you’re not running an officially distributed version but, for example, one you built yourself. Such versions lack the key Sparkle uses to verify updates, so the update check is off. Download the app again from the download page.
Other platforms
Self-updating is only available in the macOS app. The web version is always current because it loads fresh on every visit. The apps for the other platforms don’t show a version or an update button.
