Settings

All iw Toolbox settings: license, MCP server, appearance, resolver, DNS over HTTPS, timeout, Spamhaus DQS key and updates.

Open the settings with Einstellungen at the bottom of the sidebar. On narrow screens, for example in the browser or on a phone, there’s a gear icon at the top right instead. Every change applies immediately; there is no save button.

Lizenz (license)

This is where you enter the license key, see its status and check it again. All about it in License.

MCP-Server

Desktop apps only. Here you switch the local MCP endpoint for AI assistants on or off and find address, token and ready-made commands. See MCP server.

Darstellung (appearance)

System, Hell (light) or Dunkel (dark). With System, the app follows the operating system setting.

Resolver

The resolver is the DNS server the app sends its queries to. What you choose here applies to all checks where you don’t explicitly pick a different server. The status bar at the bottom of the window shows the current resolver.

Direkte Abfragen (UDP/TCP 53)

Direct queries are only available in the apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android. The options are:

Option Meaning
Resolver des Systems the DNS server your computer currently uses (default). If the app can’t determine it, it uses DNS over HTTPS.
DNS over HTTPS (siehe unten) all queries encrypted over HTTPS to the provider chosen below
20 public resolvers for example Cloudflare 1.1.1.1, Google 8.8.8.8, Quad9 9.9.9.9, DNS.WATCH, Digitalcourage, dns0.eu and resolvers in other countries
Eigener Server … any DNS server of your own. Enter its address in the IP-Adresse des Servers field, for example 192.168.1.1.

Which resolver when?

  • Resolver des Systems shows what your computer and network see, including internal names and any filtering.
  • A public resolver shows what the internet sees. Useful to rule out a cache at your ISP.
  • DNS over HTTPS is the way out when your network blocks port 53, as some corporate or guest networks do. Direct queries then run into a timeout.

DNS over HTTPS

The provider for all DNS over HTTPS queries: Cloudflare (default), Google, Quad9, AdGuard, dns0.eu or OpenDNS. In the web version this is the only option, since a browser can’t make direct DNS queries.

Zeitlimit je Abfrage (timeout per query)

How long the app waits for a DNS answer: 2, 3, 5, 8, 10 or 15 seconds. The default is 5 seconds. Increase it if slow name servers or blacklists regularly fail with „Keine Antwort“ (no answer).

Resolver for a single check

Next to the input field of every DNS check is a Standard-Resolver button. Use it to pick a different resolver for this one query: System-Resolver, one of the DoH providers or one of the public resolvers. The settings stay unchanged.

Blacklists

In the Spamhaus-DQS-Schlüssel (optional) field, enter a free DQS key from Spamhaus. Without it, the blacklist check reports Spamhaus as „nicht prüfbar“ (not checkable) over public resolvers. The key is hidden while you type.

Über (about)

Shows the platform and how many tools are available on it. Tools a platform can’t run are hidden rather than greyed out. On macOS you also see the version and the Nach Updates suchen (check for updates) button, see Updates.

Where settings are stored

The app stores the settings locally on your device. What exactly is stored where is described in Privacy in the app.
